The Welsh Group: BBK Dusseldorf
“Yma ac Acw/Hier und Da/Here and There
The Welsh Group put on a cultural/exhibition exchange with German artists from the Rheinland, supported by the Berufsverband der Bildender Künstler, the Artists’ Union of Düsseldorf and participating guests. Its title is trilingual, Yma ac Acw, Hier und Da, Here and There. It is planned to celebrate the creative “journey” common to all artists, as it is to artists these two European lands – whose respective regions also share a past heritage of mining and heavy industry, common destruction in war, and latter day industrial decline. The gagging of German contemporary art and ideas in the thirties and forties brought certain practitioners, like Schwitters, Könekamp, Josef Herman and Heinz Köpel as emigrees to Britain and Wales, where they directly inspired artistic study and experiment in the artists in Wales and contributed ideas which went into the original foundation of the group in South Wales in 1948. During the life of the group, artists of all generations and both genders from all over Wales have joined the group, as shown in our anniversary exhibition at the National Library of Wales in 2009 curated by Dr. Ceri Thomas.
Artists from Wales represented: Jacqueline Alkema, Paul Brewer, Jenny Allan, Lynne Bebb, Wendy Earle, Heather Eastes, Lorna Edmiston, Ken Elias, Chris Griffin, Robert Harding, Sue Hiley Harris, Dilys Jackson, Gus Payne, Roy Powell, Sue Roberts, Alan Salisbury, Thomasin Toohie, Jean Walcot and Islwyn Watkins.
